Once again the Western Michigan Rifle & Pistol Club hosted the state’s outdoor championship in lovely fall weather. Many thanks to Dennis Willing our Chief RO for his steady call and to Randy Tomac for watching the line and keeping the equipment running. We were lucky to have Tracy Wise behind the computer assisted by Carole Starek and Karl Rykeghem who also helped out on the line. Their help in stats allowed me to shoot the competition, for which I am immensely grateful.
The star of the weekend was our Michigan Precision Pistol Champion Neil Hays who shot a beautiful 2599-101 to win the overall, with Brad Wise in second with 2552-72 and Zach Hays in third with 2535-81. Neil also won the .22, Center Fire and .45 matches (879-36,863-31, 857-34) and joined son Zach on team “Bailing Hay” to win the Team match with 1702-42. They received the Team Trophy-in-progress put together by second place finishers in the team event Patrick Grow and Cliff Roesler. Our venerable Slow Fire Trophy went to Brad Wise (555-17).
We had three competitors shooting open sights, high score coming from Curtis Rowe (2303-37) and no .22-only shooters. High Grand senior went to Neil, High Senior to Cliff Roesler (2509-59), High Woman to Judy Tant (2490-53 ) and High Junior to Stella Grow (2287-84).
Not surprisingly, Neil won Master Class. Zach took home the Expert Class trophy and Jonathon Archambeau won Sharpshooter Class (2435-52.) We had no one in Marksman Class to give the trophy plaque to, so it will sit out the year in my basement.
Our EIC matches generated 22 Achievement Awards and produced two likely legs, both to Zach Hays in .22 Rimfire and CMP Service Revolver. The high nondistinguished shooter in the Service Pistol Match was Jason Steele with 246-3. Jason did distinguish himself by crafting a replacement Centerfire Trophy which is a work of art. As always, CMP will make the final decision on issuing points.
Regards and good shooting,
Judy Tant
